The Gym

It was a beautiful fall evening in Athens Georgia. Anna was in the gym working out after her shift as an Athens police officer, like she usually does, but this night was different. After this night the rest of her life would change more than she could have ever imagined at that moment.

In he walked. A massive muscular man. He had caramel brown skin, short raven black hair, green eyes and his arms were covered in tattoos. She couldn't help it. She had to go say something to him.

Anna wiped the sweat from her brow with a towel, her massive biceps bulging with the effort. She watched as the man approached the bench press next to hers. His sheer size commanded her attention. She picked her protein shake up, stood up, and walked purposefully over to him, her heavy footsteps echoing in the nearly empty gym.

The Gym

"Impressive physique," she said, her voice low and controlled, but with a hint of curiosity. "You don't see guys with your build around here often. I'm Anna." She extended a hand, her grip strong and confident.

The man looked up at Anna and flashed what could only be described as the perfect smile. His teeth perfectly white, his eyes seemed to light up the very room they were in. “I'm Conrad.” He said, as his massive muscular hand firmly grasped hers. As he stood there he seemed to tower over her. “You've got quite the physique yourself.” His deep voice vibrating the air around her.

Anna's eyes flickered with a spark of surprise as his hand completely engulfed hers, but she didn't flinch. Instead, she met his gaze squarely, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips. She appreciated the compliment, seeing it as a genuine observation from someone who knows what they're talking about.

"Thanks, Conrad," she replied, her voice calm and steady. "I've been at it for years. It's become a lifestyle more than a hobby. The police force keeps me in peak condition, but the gym…” She trailed off.

“What about the gym?” He asked as he started lifting the largest dumbbells on the rack, his movements smooth, as if he didn't even feel the massive weight in his massive hand. His muscles rippled in the evening light shining through the window.

Anna watched with professional admiration as he lifted the massive dumbbells with seemingly effortless grace. Her eyes followed the movement of his muscles, appreciating both the strength and the control on display.

"The gym is where I disconnect from everything else," she explained, her voice carrying that same calm authority. "When I'm under a barbell or lifting a heavy weight, there's no room for thoughts about the job, or the world. It's just me, the iron, and the burn. It's meditative, in its own way. You seem to understand that feeling.”

“You said you are a police officer?” Conrad asked. “I believe it with a body like that.” He said as he checked her out, and that perfect smile returned to his face. “I'm sure I would need to disconnect after work too, if I were a cop. Thank you for your service, by the way.” He said as he started doing squats. The bar bending from the amount of weight, yet he lifted it with ease. “Have you ever had to kill anyone?” He asked bluntly.

Anna's expression softened almost imperceptibly at the words "thank you for your service." It's a respect that she didn't get often, and it registered with her. She crossed her arms, the movement causing her own impressive biceps to flex, and watched him perform the squats. The bar does indeed bend, but his form is perfect, his control absolute.

"It's part of the job, but it's not something I talk about in the gym, you know?" she said, her tone measured.

“I get that. Sorry I asked. I didn't mean any disrespect.” He said as he racked the weight and extended his hand to shake hers again, his eyes gazing into hers as if he was soaking in the beauty that he was beholding.

Anna studied him for a moment, then accepted the handshake. His grip was firm, respectful. There's an energy between them, an electric current that she hasn't felt in a long time. She could see the genuine nature in his eyes, and it put her at ease.

"No disrespect taken, Conrad," she said, her voice softening slightly. "You asked a question a lot of people think about, but few have the courage to ask. In my line of work, you learn to read people quickly. You're not one to beat around the bush, are you?”

“Not usually.” He said with a chuckle. “I've never found much use for fear in my life.” He held Anna's hand for a little longer, seeming to be enjoying it but let it go, not wanting to cause an awkward moment with this stunning woman he had just met. “I guess with you being a cop, you haven't found much use for fear either.”

Anna nodded once, appreciating his directness. "Fear has its place, I suppose. It keeps you alive. But you learn to channel it, to use it as fuel rather than let it paralyze you. It's about control of yourself, of the situation." She let the last word hang in the air for a moment, her eyes locked onto his. "So, what is it that you do, Conrad? Something that requires that level of strength and discipline, I imagine.”

“You could say that.” Conrad said with a playful chuckle. As he started bench pressing an unbelievable amount of weight, he said, “I don't really have a need to work. I am able to get whatever I need without needing a job.” Conrad looked into middle distance, seeming to be visualizing something in his mind. “What I do requires a lot of discipline though. That's for sure, which is why I work out so much too.”

Anna's eyes widened fractionally as she watched him bench press what she estimates to be nearly twice her own maximum. She's seen a lot of strong men in her time, but Conrad's strength seemed to exist in another league entirely. She watched him complete his set and rack the weight before speaking again.

"Discipline is everything," she agreed, watching him with a mixture of admiration and curiosity. "But you don't strike me as the type to be idle. If you don't need the money, then you do it because you love it. Because you're driven by something.”

“You bet I love it!” He exclaimed. “And you can surely say that I am driven, but I must say, I am unsure what the future holds for me.” He sat up on the bench, head slumped staring at the floor. His playful demeanor replaced by something more serious. Something deep inside of himself. “I'm just not sure how to do it. How do I do it?” His voice trailed off.

Anna's demeanor shifted instantly from observation to concern. She unfolded her arms and took a step closer, her voice softening. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just hold on a second." She reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder, the contact solid and grounding. "What's going on? Something just changed. You want to talk about it? You look like you're carrying the weight of the world on those massive shoulders of yours, and I know something about that." She sat on the bench next to him, her presence commanding yet comforting.

Anna's touch was like a shot of electricity piercing through Conrad. Her muscular hands touching him softly created a contrast that lifted his soul. He picked his head up, that perfect smile returning to his face as he chuckled. “Well my last name is Atlas, so I guess having the world on my shoulders is fitting. Hahaha” He laughed, his deep voice like thunder bellowing out of him.

Anna chuckled along with him, appreciating the dark humor in the moment. "Atlas, huh? That explains a lot. And it's a hell of a name to live up to." Her eyes sparkled with genuine amusement. "You know, there's a reason they say that the strongest people are the ones who carry their burdens without complaint. You're carrying something, aren't you? Something you feel you can't share with anyone else." She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a more intimate register. "You can talk to me, Atlas. I've got broad shoulders too, and I've been known to carry a thing or two in my time.”

Conrad's eyes glowed at the sound of Anna's words. “What a wise thing to say, and very kind.” He said, with a truly genuine tone. Proceeding to do muscle ups with ease, he said. “I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a police officer has good powers of perception. Haha. I believe you and you seem like a very strong and confident woman. Easy on the eyes too, I must say. But this is a burden I have to carry on my own.” He said as he finished his set and landed on the ground with surprising grace.

Muscle Ups

Anna watched him perform the muscle-ups with that same mixture of admiration and professional respect. When he landed, she nodded slowly, absorbing his words. "You strike me as a man of principle, Conrad. Atlas. Whatever you want to call yourself. I respect that. But sometimes, even the strongest among us need a spotter. Someone to watch our back, to steady the bar when it gets too heavy. That's all I'm offering, a friendly ear, a bit of perspective from the outside." She stood up straight, her impressive figure standing confidently in front of him, but in a way that felt protective rather than intimidating.

She continued. "You're carrying this alone, I see. That's admirable. But everyone needs a place to let their guard down, to be seen for more than just what they do or what weight they can lift. I get that feeling here, in this gym. Maybe that's why I come back, night after night."

“My name is Conrad Atlas.” He said, with that perfect smile returning to his face. “You can call me Conrad or Atlas. People call me both, honestly.” He looked intently into Anna's eyes as if looking into her soul, seeing her as she is and said “I appreciate your words. Most people don't care that much. Seems like you might be a special one.” He took a drink from his bottle. A small amount of water ran down his cheek to his neck and disappeared in the fabric of his massive pecks.

Anna's eyes follow the trail of water down his neck, a brief flicker of something crossed her expression before she brought her focus back to his eyes. "Conrad Atlas, then. A name with weight. Fitting for a man who carries so much." She smiled, a genuine, warm expression that transformed her usually composed face. "And I appreciate that you see it in me. Most people see the uniform or the muscles and assume they know everything. They don't see the person behind it."

She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a more intimate, conspiratorial tone. "So, Conrad Atlas, what's your story? What drives a man like you to the gym at night, to lift weights that bend steel, and to speak with such... gravity about carrying burdens? There's more to you than meets the eye. I can feel it.”

The playful smile on Conrad's face faded away and was replaced by a more stern look. Not one of anger, but one of resolve, as if showing her that this secret is one that he can never reveal. “Can we drop it? I don't want to be rude, but I would rather not talk about it. I would rather get to know you better. How long have you lived in Athens?” He said as he hung upside down from the pull up bar and did sit ups.

Anna nodded, respecting his boundaries immediately. She knew when to push and when to let things be. "Fair enough. Some things are meant to be kept close to the vest. I understand that." She watched him do the sit-ups with a professional eye, noting his incredible core strength and control. "That's impressive, by the way. Most people would struggle to do one of those. I've lived here about five years now. Moved from Chicago for a change of pace, for the police academy. Ended up staying. It's a good town. Quiet, for the most part."

She leaned against the pull-up bar, her posture relaxed but attentive. "What about you? You're not from around here, are you? That accent... it's not southern.”

“Hahaha. Yeah, I guess I'm the one with the accent around here, huh?” He said with a laugh that seemed to shake the very room they were standing in. “No, I'm not. I'm just out here visiting my parents. They just moved out here a couple of months ago. I live in Big Bear California. It's a little mountain town in So Cal. Have you ever been there?” He asked as his demeanor softened. “Thanks for the compliment, by the way.”

Anna smiled, appreciating his laugh and the way it filled the space. "Big Bear? I've heard of it. Beautiful area, I'd imagine. Mountains, trees, clean air. A far cry from Chicago, that's for sure. I've never been, but I'd like to see it someday. Quiet is good, though. After the city, after the job, quiet becomes a commodity."

Her eyes softened as she looked at him. "And you're welcome. You've got the physique and the skill to back it up. It's refreshing to see. Most people in the gym are just posturing. They're not the real deal. You are. That's something I respect.”

Conrad dismounted from the bar with a backflip, as if to show off his agility, landing with cat-like grace. “Yeah, my place is definitely quiet. I live by myself in a house on 500 acres of land. I like my privacy, but it's nice being around people too, especially pretty girls like yourself.” His cheeks blushed slightly. “I couldn't live in the city. I definitely need my space.”

Anna's eyes widened slightly at the backflip, impressed by the display of both strength and agility. "500 acres? That's not privacy, that's your own kingdom," she said with a laugh that sounded genuine and unfiltered. "I can respect that. I'm a city girl through and through, but there's something to be said for having that much space to breathe."

She watched as he blushed, and a small, secret smile touched her lips. "You're not so bad yourself, Conrad Atlas. Not so bad at all. So, what do you do with all that space and privacy up in Big Bear? Besides building muscles that would make Hercules jealous, I mean.”

Conrad started packing his things, readying himself to leave. “Literally anything I want, that's what.” That perfect smile returning to his face. A look of mischief in his eyes. “Who knows, maybe I'll show you some day. I've gotta get going, though. I'm late for dinner with my parents. Maybe I'll see you here again next time I’m in town.”

Anna nodded, respecting his time. "That's the beauty of it, isn't it? The freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want, with the space to make it happen." She picked up her gym bag, adjusting the strap over her shoulder. "It was good to meet you, Conrad Atlas. Really good. And hey, if you're ever back in town and you want to work out with someone who can actually keep up, you know where to find me."

She held out her hand again, this time not as a formal greeting, but as a friendly gesture. "And good luck with your parents. Family stuff can be… complicated.”

The tall muscular man took her hand and shook it, lifted her hand up to his lips, and gently kissed the back of it. He looked her straight in the eyes as he did it, a look of pure fascination and respect in his eyes. “It was my pleasure, Anna. I have a feeling we will meet again.” He said.

“I would love that.” She replied.

He smiled before walking away, leaving her standing there, her hand tingling from the sensation of his lips on it. Her heart beating a little faster, as she watched his massive frame disappear through the gym doors, leaving her wondering what just happened.
